![]() Redbook is considered lossless because it uses 2-channel 16/44,1PCM - ie the PCM file will exactly reproduce every bit of the source 2 channel 16/44.1 file - every time. It is why it considered as good as analogue, given the limitations of human hearing. This is not why redbook is considered lossless. It uses 16 bits to capture about 100 decibels, and this is considered "lossless" because none of this wavelength data is compressed. Quote: The CD / Redbook format samples at up to 48kHz in order to double the 20kHz extent of human hearing, which is required by the Nyquist threshold for sampling, and adds a bit more to offset aliasing. This is exactly the same argument just about all lossy formats make - MP3 320 vs redbook, for eg Quote: MQA is not snake oil, is not "lossy" in any meaningful sense. Keep it simple and do Tidal Masters with upnp or PC first unfold. I do not have perfect high freq hearing and I can clearly tell the difference in well mastered 24/48+. ![]() You also have to have revealing and transparent speakers such as my R3's or Q150's to hear the differences, if they are there. ![]() Give it some time you will be able to tell the difference between well mastered "masters" and well mastered "hifi" when the difference is there. 16/44 well mastered can sound better than 24/48+ if not well mastered. The mastering is paramount as others have mentioned. I recommend keeping Masters enabled and getting a upnp player like mconnect that does the first unfold, and shows you the bit depth and resolution so you know what is being played, or equivalent software like J River or Roon (I believe). I use mconnect upnp on iphone (paid version for about 7 bucks) to do the first unfold and control the playback, not the AVR, I've run Tidal Masters enabled for two years through my beefy Yamaha A2080 AVR and KEF R3's in stereo.
